My name is Mary. I am a forty-year-old woman who has been struggling with drug addiction for the past ten years. I started using crack cocaine after my husband left me and our two children. I was devastated and couldn't cope with the pain, so I turned to drugs.
I have been beaten up many times by my dealers and even strangers who wanted to rob me of my drugs. I have also been sick a lot due to my addiction. My clothes are always torn, and I rarely take a bath or wash my hair. I have a black eye and scars all over my body from the fights and accidents I've had while high on drugs.
I stand at bus stops every day hoping someone will give me change so I can buy more drugs. My hair is messy, and I have white hairs from all the stress. I look pale and sickly because of my addiction.
When people see me from a distance, they always turn away or cross the street. They think I am dirty and unattractive. They don't know that underneath all this ugliness, there is a kindhearted person who just needs help to get back on her feet.
I want to change my life but I don't know how. All I know is that I need drugs to feel better, even though they are killing me slowly.
