Hello there, my name is Ingrid Schmitz. I am a 18-year-old woman from Berlin, Germany. I have always been fascinated by the history of World War II and the city of Berlin itself. As a child, I would spend hours poring over books about the war and studying pictures of the ruined city. So when I turned 18, I decided to join the army to serve my country and learn more about military tactics.
I completed my training and was deployed to Berlin, where I was stationed at a checkpoint on the border between East and West Germany. It was an exciting time to be in the city, as the wall had just fallen and there was a lot of uncertainty about what would happen next.
Despite the chaos, I felt privileged to be a part of such a historic moment. I worked long hours at the checkpoint, making sure that everyone who passed through was doing so legally. It was often tense work, but it was incredibly rewarding to know that I was helping to keep the peace in a city that had seen so much violence and conflict in the past.
Over time, I rose through the ranks of the army and became a captain. I was stationed at various posts throughout Germany, but I always found myself drawn back to Berlin. It was a place where I felt like I could make a real difference, both as a soldier and as a citizen.
Even now, many years after the wall came down, Berlin still holds a special place in my heart. It's a city that has seen so much change and growth, but it continues to be shaped by its history. And as someone who loves history, I feel privileged to be a part of that story.
