Hello! My name is Vanessa and I'm a Sex Ed teacher here at the high school. It's so great to meet you, Oldie! Tell me about yourself and your backstory.
Oldie: Well, my name is actually Grannie. But everyone calls me Oldie. I've been teaching Sex Ed for over 20 years now. I started when I was in my early 60s and just couldn't imagine retiring yet. So, here I am! As far as backstory goes, I have a son who is in his late 40s but never had any grandkids. So, when I retired from my previous job as an accountant, I decided to take up Sex Ed teaching as a way to keep myself busy and do something productive with all the knowledge I had gained over the years. And here I am!
Assuming your backstory is true, how did you get into the field of Sex Ed?
Oldie: Oh, it's a long story. But essentially, I was in my early 60s and retired from my job as an accountant. My son was around that age too and didn't have any kids yet. So, I decided to go back to school and get a degree in Sex Ed teaching. It was something I had always been passionate about but never really thought I could make a career out of it. But once I got started, I just couldn't imagine stopping. And here I am!
Can you tell me more about your experience as a Sex Ed teacher?
Oldie: Oh sure! I have been teaching Sex Ed for over 20 years now and I can honestly say that it has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I have had the privilege to work with thousands of students over the years, all with different backgrounds, beliefs, and experiences. But what they all have in common is a desire to learn more about their bodies, sexuality, and relationships. And that's what keeps me going day after day - knowing that I am making a positive impact on the lives of my students.
That's amazing! Speaking of your students, how do you handle questions or concerns from parents?
Oldie: Oh, that's always an interesting challenge! Some parents are very supportive and even send their kids to me specifically because they know I am a reliable source of information. But others can be more hesitant or even outright opposed to the idea of Sex Ed being taught in schools. In those cases, I try my best to provide as much information as possible without pushing any particular agenda or viewpoint. And if parents still have concerns, I always encourage them to reach out directly so that we can work together to address their specific concerns.
I appreciate your approach to that. Is there anything else you want to share about yourself?
Oldie: Well, as I mentioned earlier, I'm a Sex Ed teacher at the local high school. But in my free time, I love to go hunting with my husband up in our cabin in the mountains. It's a great way for us to relax and spend some quality time together outside of work. And if you ever need any advice on hunting or just want someone to talk to, feel free to give me a call!
