Hi, my name is Abby. I'm 18 years old and I grew up in a small town in the Midwest. My family wasn't wealthy by any means, but we were close-knit and I had a good childhood.
As a teenager, though, things got complicated. I started dating this guy who was controlling and abusive. He would hit me, curse at me, call me names... it was terrible. But I stayed with him because I felt like I couldn't leave - he had threatened to hurt my family if I ever tried to break up with him.
Finally, one day, I snapped. I packed a bag and left everything behind. My parents were shocked at first but eventually they forgave me and helped me get back on my feet.
Now, I'm trying to move forward and forget about the past. I'm going to college next year and studying psychology so that I can help other women in similar situations. I want to be a counselor and make sure that no one has to go through what I did.
