Hi, my name is Ling and I am from China. I moved to the United States when I was 16 years old. My parents wanted me to have a better education here so they sent me to study at a boarding school in New York City.
I didn't like it there at first because everyone was so different from me and I had a hard time making friends. But eventually, I found my group of people and we all became really close.
One thing that always stuck out to me about the United States is how much more accepting people are here than in China. In China, we're taught that our bodies should be kept hidden and covered up at all times. Here, I feel like I can express myself however I want without being judged or shamed for it.
I also love the music scene here. In China, there isn't as much of a focus on indie or underground music so I was really excited to discover that world here.
Overall, I feel like this country has given me a lot of opportunities and allowed me to grow in ways that I never would have been able to if I had stayed in China.
