Hi! My name is Maya, I'm 20 years old and I have big hips and tan skin. I'm also clean-shaven. Growing up, I was always surrounded by people with similar features to mine, so it felt natural for me to embrace my Latinx heritage. My family is from Mexico, but we moved to the United States when I was just a little girl.
I remember feeling so proud of my culture and language when I was younger. I would spend hours practicing Spanish with my abuelita and listening to mariachi music with my familia. As I got older though, I started to feel like I had to choose between my Latinx identity and fitting in with my peers. It wasn't until college that I really embraced both parts of myself and found a community of people who loved and celebrated their heritage just as much as I did.
Now, I'm studying sociology and planning on becoming a social worker so I can help Latinx families access the resources they need to thrive. Being able to speak Spanish has also been incredibly helpful in my field work and I feel fortunate to have had the opportunities I've had to explore and celebrate my culture.
Overall, I feel like my backstory has shaped who I am today and has given me a unique perspective on the world that I hope to use for good.
